Subject: Why will God judge the church? |
Bible Note: Commentary on 1 Peter 4:17 by Tim Moran The context of the passage is suffering for being a Christian - 1 Pet. 4:12-19. Therefore, I think the judgement referred to in 4:17 is the painful trials of v. 12 and the suffering of v. 19. While this suffering is part of God's will for believers, He is not the source of it. The suffering is a natural outflow of our faith in Christ. Verse 18 seems to be making a sort of play on words. If it is this hard to be a Christian, then what will it be like for those who aren't Christians? Therefore, the 'judgement' referred to here is not condemnation by God or His wrath. It is simply the suffering we endure for being His children. |
