AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Peter 3:15 But in your hearts set Christ apart [as holy--acknowledging Him, giving Him first place in your lives] as Lord. Always be ready to give a [logical] defense to anyone who asks you to account for the hope and confident assurance [elicited by faith] that is within you, yet [do it] with gentleness and respect. Bible Question:
What is the meaning of this verse and how does it apply to business |
Bible Answer: Hi, Mike... Welcome to the forum! It means to honor and glorify the holy character of the Lord, as fitting of the dwelling place of His Spirit. We are to be prepared at any given time to give a reasonable explanation of basis of our faith to those who make honest inquiry. The word "profane" literally means "before the temple." In ancient times the marketplace, the area in which a city transacted commerce, was almost always in front of the temple to the local patron deities. John Calvin used to say that Christians were to be profane. It sounds peculiar to us given the meaning of the word today. However, Calvin was using the old, literal meaning. We are to live our faith in the marketplace rather than cloistered away in the temple. In Him, Doc |
