AMPLIFIED 2015 | Joshua 4:9 Then Joshua set up [a second monument of] twelve stones in the midst of the Jordan at the place where the feet of the priests who carried the ark of the covenant were standing, and they are there to this day. |
Bible Question: what is the signifigance of joshua setting twelve stones where the priests feet were? I know the other pile of twelve stones are to remind the Israelites of God bringing them over the Jordan on dry ground. |
Bible Answer: The twelve stones were meant to provide occasions for teaching, for impressing upon the next generation Yahweh's mighty act at the Jordan. We can almost see it now. Fifteen years post-Jordan time an Israelite father and his six year-old son are strolling through Gilgal National Park. The lad spots an imposing pile of stones. He counts twelve, and exclaims, "Hey, Daddy, what are those stones for?" The son's curiosity now becomes the occasion for communicating to him the news of Israel's astounding God and how he unleased his power for his people. |
