Subject: Is there "speaking in tongues" mentioned |
Bible Note: Greetings Steve! That is interesting! Did they know Japanese? Were they just faking it? Or, were they being influced by the 'other side'? It is not all together clear that 1 Cor. 12:1-3 is speaking of tongues, but there are two possible views. 1) One says that this passage is speaking of people denouncing Christ under persecution. Paul would then be saying that no real Christian could ever denounce Christ by cursing Him. 2) The second is that there were false 'tongue speakers' at Cornith and that Paul was setting up a standard by which such 'speaking' gifts could be judged. But, this subject of 'fake' speakers is another area of speculation. Paul nevers uses any language that would indicate that there were fake speakers. There may have been or there may have not been! :-) Abuse of the gift was definitly going on since Paul felt necessary to regulate the use of the gift. I would agree with your last statement my friend. Over the years, I have developed a little different approach concerning 'gifts'. I prefer not to use the term 'have' a gift. I believe that 1 Cor. 12:7 indicates that 'gifts' are dispersed as needed, not as possessions. If a 'tongue' is needed, God gives it. If wisdom is needed, God gives it. If healing is needed, God gives it. I like to view Spiritual gifts as weapons on a weapon rack that are handed out depending upon the kind of battle in which we are currently engaged. All of the gifts are necessary, but some more some at particular times than others. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
