AMPLIFIED 2015 | Hebrews 9:28 so Christ, having been offered once and once for all to bear [as a burden] the sins of many, will appear a second time [when he returns to earth], not to deal with sin, but to bring salvation to those who are eagerly and confidently waiting for Him. |
Bible Question: Why is the word "time" not italicized since it is not in the original Greek? Also the greek "ek"(from, out of)is before the word "second" and not translated. Why? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Rigunsmith! Some Greek words, used in a phrase, have a meaning somewhat different from the sum of their parts. In this case, 'ek deuterou' literally means 'second time'. It is used 6 times in the New Testament in this fashion. The occurrences are found in: Mt. 26:42, Mark 14:72, John 9:24, Acts 10:15, Acts 11:9, and Heb. 9:28. That is why 'ek' is not translated and 'time' is not italicized - the two together mean 'second time'. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
