NASB | Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active and full of power [making it operative, energizing, and effective]. It is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating as far as the division of the soul and spirit [the completeness of a person], and of both joints and marrow [the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and judging the very thoughts and intentions of the heart. |
Bible Question: Heb. 4:11-13 Why is the Bible called a two-edge sword? In vs. 12 "For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edge sword...." This verse indicates that the Word of God is sharper than a two-edge sword, yet the Word of God is called a two-edge sword. |
Bible Answer: dear jepson, i think you might be referring to ephesians 6:11-17 and the armour of GOD. verse 17 says "and take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the SPIRIT which is the word of GOD." now in revelation 1:16 JESUS is said to have a sharp twoedged sword coming out of HIS mouth. lets look at one purpose of a sword, to cut.if we go to the 2nd chapter of acts on the day of pentacost ,when the HOLY SPIRIT came down people thought those who received the HOLY SPIRIT were drunk. peter got up and preached, using scripture.looking at verse 37 the people were "cut to the heart" and asked what shall we do? peter used the word of GOD "the sword of the SPIRIT"to cut to their hearts. a sword (oranything else ) cannot get to the soul or spirit of man(hebrews 4:12) i would suggest that you do a word study on sword. i have found that doing word studies has really increased my knowledge of the scriptures. do this in a notebook for future reference. |
