NASB | Hebrews 13:4 Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled; for fornicators and adulterers God will judge. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Hebrews 13:4 Marriage is to be held in honor among all [that is, regarded as something of great value], and the marriage bed undefiled [by immorality or by any sexual sin]; for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous. |
Bible Question: Can I get some actual verses that state sex is a sin outside of marriage, and to not have sex before marriage? This verse Heb 13:4 seems to me they are talking about keeping the marriage bed sacred, to not go out and cheat and sleep with other people (adultry), but doesn't seem to me it's talking about sex before marriage. Some help on this topic please. I need some actual verses. Thank you. |
Bible Answer: Laeticia - Blessings! Let me answer first by stating what sex outside of marriage actually is termed, along with its definition. Biblically, sex outside of marriage is "fornication." The definition of fornication is "consensual sexual intercourse between two persons not married to each other" (merriam webster). Located in the very verse you cite, (Hebrews 13:4), is the statement, "fornicators...will be judged." If fornication (sex outside of marriage) is not sin, why would God say He is going to judge those who practice it? You actually have to go no further than the verse you cite for your answer. Any time fornication is mentioned in the bible (particularly the New Testament) it is mentioned in the context of sin. Also, in biblical terms, fornication is likened to idolatry, which is idol worship. The book of Hosea speaks constantly of this. In that book, God instructed Hosea to marry Gomer, a woman who was a prostitute! God had Hosea to do this so that Hosea could effectively minister God's message to the Israelites that they had turned to other gods and were worshipping idols (and therefore were spiritually "unfaithful" to Him). God told the Israelites in that book that they were "playing the harlot." Sex ultimately is an act of worship, whether in its proper biblical context or outside of it. Outside of marriage, it is fornication and therefore idolatry, which is sin. No one who is outside of covenant with God can worship Him. And therefore those who have no covenant with each other should not engage themselves sexually with one another. Hope that helps. Blessings to you! |
