NASB | Hebrews 13:17 ¶ Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Hebrews 13:17 ¶ Obey your [spiritual] leaders and submit to them [recognizing their authority over you], for they are keeping watch over your souls and continually guarding your spiritual welfare as those who will give an account [of their stewardship of you]. Let them do this with joy and not with grief and groans, for this would be of no benefit to you. |
Bible Question:
Dear Brethren, Is it right for a pastor or a minister of God to rebuke just a few members (who happened to be leaders) in his Sunday sermon/teaching? I don't expect him to do it because prior to that we have personal talk and he never gave me a hint that he has something against me. Am a born again Christian from the Philippines. Thanks. ROD |
Bible Answer: Hi, ROD! I do not know the intent of your pastor so I cannot judge him... this said... unless a member of any congregation (be he/she a tyro or a leader) is behaving in a disruptive manner or is fomenting dissension or other anti-Christian doctrines the pulpit is the last recouse to address any matter! When resolving problems in the Body of Christ we are called to speak directly to the individual/s in a one-to-one session; if this does not work, we are to bring another couple of ministers (brethren) to further discuss the situation and seek an amicable solution... if this still does not work, then we are commanded to bring it to the Church... finally, if nothing works, the person who refuses to maintain peace in the Body must be removed (ousted) from the congregation: 15"If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. 16But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that 'every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.' 17If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector. (Matthew 18:15-17) Of course, Jesus is not talking about a person with the intent to damage the Church... a minister of the Word (a Chrisitian) is obliged to behave accordingly... but those who minister to the ministers (deacons, priests, elders/bishops) are held at a higher level of responsibility and are commanded to be exemplary members of the Body: Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. (James 3:1) 19Do not entertain an accusation against an elder unless it is brought by two or three witnesses. 20Those who sin are to be rebuked publicly, so that the others may take warning. (1 Timothy 5:19-20) So, as Doc suggested, look inward, test your spirit... humble yourself to God if you are found wanting... and pray for both your spiritual and your brother/s spiritual well-being... if the error is not found in you, seek correction, in love and humility... offering your prayers to God so that the Holy Spirit may enlighten your congregation and that the problem may evaporate from within your midst! If you've not done so yet, begin an intense life of prayer and Bible Study... seeking the assistant of your brothers in Christ... remember that the battle is not against man, made of flesh and blood, but against spiritual beings bent on bringing chaos and schisms into the Body of Christ!: 11Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. (Ephesians 6:11-13) God Bless! Angel |
