NASB | Hebrews 12:17 For you know that even afterwards, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought for it with tears. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Hebrews 12:17 For you know that later on, when he wanted [to regain title to] his inheritance of the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no opportunity for repentance [there was no way to repair what he had done, no chance to recall the choice he had made], even though he sought for it with [bitter] tears. [Gen 27:30-40] |
Subject: seeking repentance |
Bible Note: Hi terrib, Good answer. The version that I found that expressed it well was the N.E.B. for Hebrews 12:17, "He sold his birthright for a single meal, and you know that although he wanted afterwards to claim the blessing, he was rejected; for he found no way open for second thoughts, although he strove, to the point of tears, to find one." The second thoughts, or after-thoughts were what weren't available to Isaac. Or for Esau for that matter; for the birthright was not available to him any longer. Genesis 27:38, NASB, "And Esau said to his father, "Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me, even me also, O my father." So Esau lifted his voice and wept." Welcome to the forum.
