Bible Question: I would like to receive information on church membership. I have found it nowhere in the Bible. |
Bible Answer: There are a number of items the Bible does not talk about directly but are covered under general rules. Romans 16: is about members of the church. Many of the Pauline letters talk about Christians as part of a whole, especially the last chapter of his epistles. 1 Corinthians 5:4 (NASB) In the name of our Lord Jesus, when you are assembled, and I with you in spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus, 5:5 I have decided to deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of his flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. 5:6 Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough? 5:7 Clean out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed. This passage is clearly talking about removing one from the church, if not the church membership list. 3 John 1:9 I wrote something to the church; but Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them, does not accept what we say. 1:10 For this reason, if I come, I will call attention to his deeds which he does, unjustly accusing us with wicked words; and not satisfied with this, neither does he himself receive the brethren, and he forbids those who desire to do so, and puts them out of the church. One can’t be put out if they aren’t part of something. While on a different subject, it is one of the strongest “proof texts” for church membership. |
