NASB | Hebrews 1:5 ¶ For to which of the angels did He ever say, "YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU"? And again, "I WILL BE A FATHER TO HIM AND HE SHALL BE A SON TO ME"? |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Hebrews 1:5 ¶ For to which of the angels did the Father ever say, "YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN (fathered) YOU [established You as a Son, with kingly dignity]"? And again [did He ever say to the angels], "I SHALL BE A FATHER TO HIM AND HE SHALL BE A SON TO ME"? [2 Sam 7:14; Ps 2:7] |
Bible Question:
In Hebrews 1:5 what does God the Father mean when He said in the NASB that "Today I have begotten Thee (Jesus)". Is the Father referring to Jesus' physical birth or is there another explanation for God's statement. Thanks |
Bible Answer: The Scriptures prove Jesus is superior to the angels 1. (5) Superior because He is the Son (evidence: Psalm 2:7 and 2 Samuel 7:14) a. The more excellent name of 1:4 is the name Son b. The angels may collectively be called "sons of God" (Job 1:6), but not angel would ever be given that title individually c. Begotten speaks of the equality of substance and essential nature between the Father and Son d. We must avoid the tendency to promote Jesus' deity at the expense of His humanity; the incarnation means that He is fully God and fully man; no single book stresses both themes than does Hebrews |
