Bible Question: How much "more" do we need than God's word -- the Scriptures? I hear people on many of these cable TV religious programs asking for "the anointing" or some special, tailor-made revelation from God. I hear them say, "God told me this or God told me that." They seem always to want more -- more than what God has revealed in His word. Have we become a generation of "Oliver Twist" Christians, saying to God, "Please, sir, I want some more" (See Dickens' Oliver Twist, Chapter 2). Is God's word as revealed in Holy Scripture incomplete? Does each of us require special revelation, special treatment -- indeed, individual tutoring -- from Almighty God? Critique this modern TV "gospel" that is being pumped into the homes of America. What's wrong with wanting "more" -- more revelation, more assurance, more of everything spiritual than the word of God comprehends? --Hank |
Bible Answer: Hello Hank! I do not believe that the Word of God is in no way incomplete.. We spend our lifetimes studying the Word of God and we still cannot completely fathom this perfect revelation in our hearts! But if we continue to diligently study it, then our hearts and minds will be centered on the thoughts of God, and not our own. No one needs any "special treatment" or "special revelation", as pronounced by these salesmen on television. We should be content with what God has given us, and not always be desperate for more! (Heb. 13:5, 1 Tim. 6:8; Phil. 4:11; Luke 3:14) If we constantly and deliberately continue to look for a "greater revelation" then what has already been given us, then perhaps that is the best indicator in finding out what we (or they) are spiritually lacking in. And dwelling on this periphery "revelation" does nothing more than to "unrevit" our focus off of God and His Son. Of course, everyone wanted a sign from God, but Jesus (the Ultimate Revelation that any part of all creation would ever receive), was standing right there, in their midst, and said to them, "no sign will be given this generation except for the sign of Jonah, for even as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation." (Luke 11:29-30) There can be no greater or any "accessory" revelation that man can receive than the revelation that Jesus Christ is the Son of God! Blessings to you, Nolan |
