Bible Question:
As I was teaching someone about the bible, I demonstrated a few of the significant prophecies that have come true. The person then asked me, "How do you know the people who wrote the Bible did not use astrology or fortune telling techniques to do it?" He mentioned that there are so many people who can tell the future. He gave me a few examples from his own experiences in visiting a fortune teller and how well his future was told. He also mentioned Nostradamus, and how he has predicted so many things. If I can give him an answer to this question, he will believe the Bible is the only place to find God. What should I tell him? |
Bible Answer: Hello tonyp, Here's my perspective: First, one would only need to read the Bible to determine that it is not written by "fortune tellers". This is self-evident. None of the author's claim to be fortune tellers. Has your friend even read it?; Second, turn the tables on him. Really, the burden of proof is on your friend to show otherwise! Can he demonstrate that his opinion has any merit? Has he done any serious study on the origins of the Word of God?; Third, can your friend provide specific "people" who've predicted the future? Have 100-percent of their predictions come true? Most of fortune telling has very little to do with knowing the future. Nostradamus has made many vague "predictions" that are hard to validate; Lastly, scripture itself gives the test of any prophet: Deut 18:20 'But the prophet who speaks a word presumptuously in My name which I have not commanded him to speak, or which he speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.' Deut 18:21 "You may say in your heart, 'How will we know the word which the LORD has not spoken?' Deut 18:22 "When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the thing does not come about or come true, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him. Jesus Christ is the ultimate validity for scripture. His death, burial, and resurrection validate that the Bible is true and is indeed the word of God (1 Cor. 15) BradK |
