Bible Question:
It is common to life coaches of almost all Christian minitries to mix and match portions of the bible. They pick verses from different books to provide biblical support to their sermon. Although the verses sounds interrelated I think it is improper to interpret the Word out of context. It must be considered also that the books of the bible were written by different men at different times and that languages also evolves. Please share your thoughts. Any expert advise would be appreciated. |
Bible Answer: God's day to you, greatmacoy, and welcome to the SBF, Picking verses from different books to provide biblical support to their sermon, is okay if they use exegesis and not eisegesis. Some preachers use a topical method, instead of preaching from a book at a time. If eisegesis is the method it is wrong, because it "forces" the Bible to mean something that fits what they want. It is VERY dangerous to base a thought on a single verse. Remember that verse and other divisions are not inspired. Each book of the Bible was one continous "sentence" ... tho some books like Isaiah were written on several scrolls. Exegesis lets the Bible speak for itself. - It is important to read the immediate context. For me that is the paragraph or thought. There are some bad verse/ chapter breaks. - Also, understand the context within the book, including why the book was written, to/by whom ... - Look within the book and at other books for related themes. While the Bible was written by 40 different men, God is the true Author. It is great when I am reading or even listening, that I think about a related passage. - It is important to understand the original word definitions. Even reading several English translations may not give us what the original means. For example, we need to know what love and worship means in the original to properly understand what is being written. Searcher |
