Bible Question: Does this mean that if a man, otherwise qualified to be an elder, does not have children he is not qualified to be a church elder? |
Bible Answer: marmil3 You can't be an elder useless you have children to make you old. :-) Seriously the qualifications given in Timothy can be taken one of two ways. One if you have children they should respect you and behave. Others read it to mean you can't be an elder useless you have children and they must respect you and behave. This can go either way. I today's world of political correctness most chose the former. However God made many stipulations in reference to the office of the priest in the Old Testament that wouldn't fly in today's PC world either. For instance you couldn't have a deformity that prevented you from having children and be a priest. Some times I wonder if a man should be an elder and never have had any children. Without being a parent it is hard to understand a parents love and even harder to understand a parent’s discipline of a child. Some times we read these qualifications and read into them things that sound right to us and I’m not sure. Thankfully I never had to make the decision one way or the other but I assure you if the problem presented itself I would have to go into deep prayer before I agreed that a man without children was God choice for an elder.
