AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Timothy 2:12 I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet [in the congregation]. |
Bible Question: Is Paul saying women cannot, under any circumstances, teach men? I have recently heard the correct meaning here is that Paul does not permit women, who are tending to usurp the God-ordained authority (and associated responsibilities) of men in the church. This was a local problem, given the unusual place of women in Ephesian society. Paul does not forbid women from teaching men pur se. |
Bible Answer: Hello Fellow Pilgrim, There is a problem in saying that Paul's instruction here is only because of the Ephesian culture--the entire book can be said to be instruction only for the Ephesian culture. 1 Timothy becomes unimportant. Taken together with 1 Cor 12 and 1 Cor 14, a better thought is that women are not to be teaching men or taking leadership over men in church. This gives freedom to teach unbelievers, etc. outside the regular meetings of the church. Steve |
