Bible Question:
Hi, rejoicing in the Lord always is something is a great command to do. It seems a little extreme to do it but again that's where the definition comes from, part of it anyways. Rejoice is an emotion; I'll give the definition of rejoice, to show you what I mean. Rejoice: to feel joy or great delight. And joy is: the emotion evoked by well-being, success, or good fortune or by the prospect of possessing what one desires : delight b: the expression or exhibition of such. How are we to do this always as Phillipians 4:4 says, "4Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice." Sometimes it always doesn't feel right to be in a great delight mood and thinking pattern. But is this what the Lord is telling us to do? Rejoice in Jesus Christ always? The thing that comes to mind is is it always right to always be joyful 24hours a day? Thank you, God bless. I know my question is to the point and straight forward, but just trying to understand more. |
Bible Answer: Dear NightJay, Scriptures: Eccl 3:4, 10-11 Rom 12:15 2 Cor 6:10, 7:10 It does not literally mean to rejoice in every single second continuously 24 hours a day. I hope the below commentaries are helpful for your understanding of the scripture. ----- John Gill Phil 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord always,.... This is a repetition of the exhortation in the preceding chapter; See Gill on "Php 3:1"; with this addition "alway"; for there is always cause and matter for rejoicing in Christ, even in times of affliction, distress, and persecution; since he is always the same; his grace is always sufficient; his blood has a continual virtue in it, and always speaks for peace and pardon; his righteousness is an everlasting one, and so is his salvation, and such is his love; though some join this word with what follows, [and] again, I say, rejoice; this is what was continually inculcated by him, as being of great importance and use for the comfort of believers, and the honour of Christ. Phil 3:1 Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord,.... The Syriac version reads, "in our Lord," i.e. Christ. …, he exhorts them in a most affectionate manner, as his dear brethren in a spiritual relation, that they would make Christ their chief joy; that whatever sorrow they might have on account of his bonds, … he observes they had reason to rejoice in their Lord and Saviour; …, yet Christ should be the principal object of their joy. A believer has always reason to rejoice in Christ; in the greatness of his person, he being in the form of God, and equal to him, and therefore able to save his to the uttermost by his obedience and death, and has interest enough in heaven to make his intercession prevalent and successful and power to keep safe all that are committed to him; and in the fitness of his person to be a Mediator, and daysman, to take care of things pertaining to the glory of God, and to make reconciliation for sin; and in the fullness of his person, he having all grace in him for his people, which is all theirs, and with joy may they draw water out of the full wells of salvation in him; and in the beauty of his person which surpasses all others, a sight of which fills with joy unspeakable, and full of glory. They may, and should rejoice, as they sometimes do, in his salvation; in the contrivance of it by infinite wisdom; in the impetration of it by himself; and in the application of it by his spirit; and that because hereby justice is satisfied, the law is magnified and made honourable, sin is finished, and an everlasting righteousness brought in. Also they are called upon to rejoice in his resurrection, which is for their justification; in his ascension, seeing he then received gifts for men; and in his session at the right hand of God, which is in their nature; and in his intercession which is to their advantage; and in all the relations he stands in to them, as head, husband, father, brother, friend; and in everything that is his, and that belongs unto him, as his Gospel, ordinances, ways, and worship... --------- Darby Phil 4:4 … "Rejoice in the Lord." If he even weeps over many who call themselves Christians, he rejoices always in the Lord; in Him is that which nothing can alter. This is not an indifference to sorrow which hinders weeping, but it is a spring of joy which enlarges when there is distress, because of its immutability, and which becomes even more pure in the heart the more it becomes the only one; and it is in itself the only spring that is infinitely pure. When it is our only spring, we thereby love others. If we love them besides Him, we lose something of Him. When through exercise of heart we are weaned from all other springs, His joy remains in all its purity, and our concern for others partakes of this same purity. Nothing moreover troubles this joy, because Christ never changes. The better we know Him, the better are we able to enjoy that which is ever enlarging through knowing Him. But he exhorts Christians to rejoice: it is a testimony to the worth of Christ, it is their true portion. Four years in prison chained to a soldier had not hindered his doing it, nor being able to exhort others more at ease than he. Shalom Azure |
