Bible Question:
What is the name that God bestowed on his Son? I say the name is The Lord Jesus Christ. The message from God was that His name would be called Jesus because He would save His people from their sins. But then God made him to be both Lord and Christ. His name then is a combination of all of these, each word pregnant with meaning. But what do you say? |
Bible Answer: On the names of our Lord: reference text, Matthew 1:16: "And Jacob begot Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ." ..... Christos (Christ), meaning anointed, is the Greek form of the Hebrew "Messiah" (Daniel 9:25,26). "Christ" is the official name or title of our Lord. Jesus is His human name (Luke 1:31; 2:21. The name or title "Christ" connects Him with the entire Old Testament foreview of a coming Prophet (Deut.18:15-19), Priest (Ps.110:4), and King (2 Sam.7:12,13). As these were typically anointed with oil (1 Kings 19:16), so Jesus was anointed with the Holy Spirit (Matt.3:16; Mk.1:10,11; Luke 3:21,22; John 1:32,33), thus becoming officially identified as the Christ. .....
