Bible Question:
I've always heard and have been taught that when one dies they are sent to heaven to be with God, walking the streets of gold. That's a nice thought to have, but after studying the Bible thats not what I have learned. Everyone always quotes 2 Corinthians 5:8 but I am confused because of Acts 2:34. And Revelations 6:11. And the streets of Gold are not until the new Jerusalem is created, by my understanding of Revelation 21:21. Could someone please help me to understand??? |
Bible Answer: Hello mmbe, Maybe I can be of help to you:-) Here's what 2 Cor. 5:8 says. "we are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home (present- NKJV)) with the Lord." (NASB) So, the verse says, "to be absent from the body and to be 'present' with the Lord". It does not add, "sent to heaven to be with God walking the streets of gold"! That sounds nice, but is more of an embellishment- or stretch- than truth. Paul similarly echo's this thought in Phil 1:23, "But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better;" (NASB) Scripture teaches those who are dead and believers are "with the Lord". |
