Bible Question:
1Thessalonians 4:13 to 18. These verses refer to those who die in Christ. The words "those who have fallen asleep" are mentioned here and other passages. Does thia mean when we die that we are in a state of sleep until the coming of the Lord. For some this is called grave sleep. I am aware that no matter if there is grave sleep or as Hebrews 9:27 says "And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgement." NASB Even this verse can mean that AFTER, which who knows when after is, could mean when Christ returns, then it is after. Please answer this only with scriptural back up. This is important to me, and please take time in answering it. Thank you for your answer. justme |
Bible Answer: Dear brother justme: I do not think the scripture supports "soul sleep" I would agree however, that our bodies sleep until the resurrection. Paul writes to the Phillipian believers "For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:" Phil 1:23 "To be" is a sense of being with Christ. In 2 Cor. 5 Paul writes in V8 "...absent from the body and to be present with the Lord" I believe there is a sense in this verse which would suggest a concious presence with the Lord. In Rev. 6:9 under the fifth seal we are shown the "souls of them which were slain for the word of God... In verse 10 these souls are crying" How long O Lord holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth. The point I am making here is that these souls are communicating with God. As you have rightly pointed out the death of a Christian is generally referred to as sleep in contrast to the unbelievers who are referred to as the dead. In Christ we who were dead in tresspasses and in sin are made alive. I have difficulty understanding why we would be put to sleep to await the resurrection of our bodies. Peace In his Name Robert |
