Bible Question:
Is there any significance in the use of the number ten here? I've been told that it can symbolise eternity, but can't find anything to support that. Also, was the congregation or assembly, the temple, or parts of the temple? What exactly were they excluded from? Thanks |
Bible Answer: Greetings Diomede, The most significant occurrences of the number '10' in scripture that I am aware of are with the number of commandments, the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20), and to give a tithe, or one tenth of our property, produce or income to God (Genesis 14:20, 28:22; Hebrews 7:2,6). The first beast, spoken of in Revelation 13:1 (17:3), has "ten horns and seven heads, with ten diadems on its horns and blasphemous names on its heads" (see also Daniel 7:7,24). Apart from the above, I do not believe that there is any particular significance to the number '10' in Scripture, except for describing numerous people, places or things. Ten '10' is also a popular number for designating money in the Bible (ex. ten minas - Luke 19:13). I do not believe that the number '10' has any special significance in Deut. 23:3, except for describing a very, very long time (tenth generation). Blessings to you, Makarios |
