NASB | Deuteronomy 21:23 his corpse shall not hang all night on the tree, but you shall surely bury him on the same day (for he who is hanged is accursed of God), so that you do not defile your land which the LORD your God gives you as an inheritance. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Deuteronomy 21:23 his body shall not hang all night on the tree, but you shall most certainly bury him on the same day (for he who is hanged is cursed by God), so that you do not defile your land which the LORD your God gives you as an inheritance. [Gal 3:13] |
Bible Question: Now, from your answer, can we say that Jesus was accursed of God? (for violating His laws)I am really interested in fleshing this out a bit. Thanks for your response! Momma |
Bible Answer: Greetings Mommapbs! In Gal. 3:13, Paul was using a comman method of Rabbanical interpretation. In short, they would string verses together based on a common word. For a great example of this, look at Rom. 9 and follow how Paul quotes from the Old Testament using the word 'people.' Gal. 3:10 quotes Deut. 27:26 saying that everyone who does not obey the Law is cursed. Then, Gal. 3:13 quotes Deut. 21:23 saying that anyone who hangs on a tree is cursed. The point simply being that we are all under the curse of the Law because we cannot obey it. Christ could, but He took our place on the cross, in effect becoming a curse for us. However, Paul never says that Jesus was accursed of God. He never sinned, nor was guilty of sin. So, I wouldn't press the point to much! He simply "became a curse for us" by taking our place and dying in our behalf! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
