Subject: Which Enemies Could Israel Marry? |
Bible Note: Shalom Bowler, It could also be that some of the battles the spoils were to be God's, like Jericho. Absolutely nothing was to be taken from that city (see what happened to Achan when he took a few items that belonged to God!), and other battles the spoils were open for the taking. All the nations mentioned in chapter 7 were to be completely destroyed (but I don't think that that happened). But the cities spoken of in chapter 21 are also spoken of as being completely destroyed except for the few women that would be taken as wives (that's why God gave them time to mourn, the loss of parents, family, friends, homeland). I don't think that allowance is talking about an Israelite man going off into some gentile country and taking a wife, only the few enemy women taken captive in battle. (There were many instances where the order was to keep alive the virgin girls and young children, and livestock.) Again, my understanding of the passages Like you, still learning, and Loving It!!!
