Bible Question:
Good morning...Yes another new kid on the block. I have been reading the forum for a few weeks and just have to get involved. Being a beliver for years but just recently began to seek and study. Now questions arise daily and I am allways looking for other believers to share opinions with. In regards to Titheing. Is it titheing if I take my 10th and give it to those in need as opposed to the church. Deuteronomy 14, 28 reads : "At the end of every third year bring the tithe of all your crops and store it in the nearest town. 29 Give it to the Levites, who have no inheritance among you, as well as to the foreigners living among you, the orphans, and the widows in your towns, so they can eat and be satisfied. Then the LORD your God will bless you in all your work. May god bless all Thanks Calvin |
Bible Answer: AMPLIFIED Deuteronomy 14:28-29 At the end of every three years you shall bring forth all the tithe of your increase the same year and lay it up within your towns. And the Levite [because he has no part or inheritance with you] and the stranger or temporary resident, and the fatherless and the widow who are in your towns shall come and eat and be satisfied, so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands that you do. "14:28 At the end of every third year. In year 3 and year 6 of the 7 year sabbatical cycle, rather than taking this tithe to the central sanctuary, it was instead stored up within the individual cities in the Land. This tithe was used to feed the Levites, the orphan, the widow, and the stranger (i.e., foreigner) who lived with the Israelites. Compare Deut. 26:12; Numbers 18:26-32." (MacArthur Study Bible) When we consider tithing, we need to remember that tithes "were not primarily gifts to God, but taxes for funding the national budget in Israel."* Also, if we choose to keep the Law regarding tithing, note that "Smaller taxes were also imposed on the people by the law (Leviticus 19:9-10; Exodus 23:10-11). So the total giving required of the Israelites was not 10 percent, but well over 20 percent. All that money was used to operate the nation."* ___________________ *(www.gty.org) For much more in-depth information on Tithing, including many Scripture references, look up Tithing in Baker's Evangelical Dictionary of Biblical Theology.
