Bible Question:
Reading the bible I came across the expression:"other Gods" several times and I examined the matter. I found 65(!) verses containing the expression. There is no explanation about who they are, (exept for Baal(-Sebub) who according to an explanation in the back of a bible is the "Lord of flies" - is Belzebub - is Satan). The expression implies however, that there are other Gods. Who are they? Interesting is though, that this expression is only used in ten books of the OLD testament, starting at Exod 18:11 and ending at Hos 3:1 |
Bible Answer: Frank, The "other gods" are idols and/or demons. Exodus 20:3 "You shall have no other gods before Me. Notice that the true God is not giving credence to those other gods. He warns His people not to decieve themselves into thinking that there are "other gods" responsible for blessing them: Deuteronomy 11 13"And it shall be that if you earnestly obey My commandments which I command you today, to love the LORD your God and serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul, 14then I[2] will give you the rain for your land in its season, the early rain and the latter rain, that you may gather in your grain, your new wine, and your oil. 15And I will send grass in your fields for your livestock, that you may eat and be filled.' 16Take heed to yourselves, lest your heart be deceived, and you turn aside and serve other gods and worship them, 17lest the LORD's anger be aroused against you, and He shut up the heavens so that there be no rain, and the land yield no produce, and you perish quickly from the good land which the LORD is giving you. Often even now we as Christians are in danger of attributing our blessings to our jobs, our education, or our ingenuity. We sometimes lean towards worship of our possessions instead of the one true God. God is well aware of how we tend to decieve ourselves: Isaiah 44:9 Those who make an image, all of them are useless, And their precious things shall not profit; They are their own witnesses; They neither see nor know, that they may be ashamed. Revelation 9:20 But the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, that they should not worship demons, and idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk. There is only one true and living God. Pastor Glenn |
