Bible Question: In light of some of the recent discussions, is this a baptism? How is one "cleansed" by the washing of water with the word? |
Bible Answer: Wowrd study ... washing - loutron (Strong's 3067) Mommapbs, greetings Loutron means bathing, bath, the act of bathing. It is used here and Titus 3:5, "He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit" To answer it is liek taking a bath, which I think even then, it was to remove the dirt. I think it was done outside the tub ... then one got in the tub clean. It is a different Greek word and root than baptizo. My point is that we must not just look at the English translations, we must look at what the Greek says. Also, the word used for wash in John 13:5-14, where Jesus washes His disciple's feet. Nipto (Strong's 3538) ... it means to wash or to wash one's self. I would like it to be connected with baptizo. Apolouo (Strong's 628) is the word used in Acts 22:16. also see 1Co 6:11. It means to wash off or away and is from apo (Strong's 575) meaning of separation or of origin ... and louo (Strong's 3068) meaning to bathe, wash ... and is the root of loutron. Searcher |
