Bible Question: Hello! This is Marcus again concerning the church of christ. Were there other churches that used instruments and did God approved of that and did God allow them to enter into the Kingdom? Thanks |
Bible Answer: Hi, Marcus... Briefly, here's a bit of history: Alexander Campbell was the founder of the "Church of Christ." He was appointed preacher of the "First Church of the Christian Association of Washington" in 1811. By 1830, Campbell had become a very outspoken advocate of baptismal regeneration. Campbell asserted that "a week's debating is worth a year's preaching." (Paul's approach was rather different (Romans 1:29; 1 Corinthians 1:18, 21).) This same spirit of debate is still very present among his followers, now properly termed "Campbellites." Later the Campbellites embraced the teaching of Matthias Luce (an ex-Baptist), Walter Scott (an itinerate preacher), and Barton Stone (an ex-Presbyterian). Together with Campbell they are known as the "big four." The Church of Christ is characterized in their beliefs by: amillennialism, baptismal regeneration, denial of eternal security, denial of inherited sin, weekly communion, musical instruments prohibited in worship, salvation through works, and "true church theory." Perhaps the above generalities -- and Kalos' specific answer on instruments in church worship -- will be helpful for you in your further research. In Him, Doc |
