Bible Question:
Am I correct in saying that according to this verse, faith is a gift? Thanks! |
Bible Answer: Hello Huron, Good question. Not exactly. Allow me to comment. Eph. 2:8 says, "For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;" (NASB) The Amplified provides some comment that may be helpful. It says, "For it is by free grace (God's unmerited favor) that you are saved (delivered from judgment and made partakers of Christ's salvation) through [your] faith. And this [salvation] is not of yourselves [of your own doing, it came not through your own striving], but it is the gift of God;" Biblically, we know that "...faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ." (Rom. 10:17) So, strictly speaking faith is not a gift. Faith is the "action" we take when we place our trust in God and His Word. Yet, the Word also tells us, "For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith."
