AMPLIFIED 2015 | Ephesians 2:6 And He raised us up together with Him [when we believed], and seated us with Him in the heavenly places, [because we are] in Christ Jesus, |
Bible Question: I recently heard "to be seated" meant in a position of authority. Any thoughts on this? |
Bible Answer: Hello strts5, Here's how the ESV reads: "and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus," Due to the 'immeasurable riches of His grace', the believer has the exalted position given him. I would be careful about calling it a "position of authority" simply because it was freely given (graced) to us by the Lord. We are exalted by Him, so I would more rightly term it a "position of blessing". A.T Robertson makes this note in his Word Pictues: "Ephesians 2:6 In Christ Jesus [en Christoi Iesou]. All the preceding turns on this phrase. See Col. 3:1 for the word [sunegeiren]. Made to sit with him [sunekathisen]. First aorist active indicative of [sunkathizô], old causative verb, but in N.T. only here and Luke 22:55." The late Dr. Wuest in his Word Studies, Exposition of Ephesians offers these insights: "Hath raised us up together” is (Gr.)sunegeiro. Expositors translates, “Raised us with Him,” and comments: “That is, to life now, in a present spiritual sense. The sunegeiro expresses the definite idea of resurrection, and primarily that of physical resurrection. The introduction of this term and the following makes it not improbable that both ideas, that of the present moral resurrection and that of the future bodily resurrection, were in Paul’s mind, and that he did not sharply distinguish between them, but thought of them as one great gift of life.” “Made us sit together” is the translation of sunkathizo, which Expositors translates, Seated us (or, enthroned us) with Him in the heavenlies, and comments: “Made us sharers with Him it dignity and dominion, so that even now, and in foretaste of our future exaltation, our life and thought are raised to the heavenlies where He reigns.” As to the phrase “in Christ Jesus,” the same authority says: “Not the ‘seated us with Him’ only, but the whole statement is qualified by this. This quickening, this resurrection, this seating of us with Him take effect in so far as we are in Him as our Representative, having our life and our completeness in our Head." I hope this will help, BradK |
