Bible Question: This past Wed. our preacher said that if we don't ask for forgiveness from our sins, God will not hear our prayers even if we have been saved for years. I had always thought that once we get saved God remembers our sins no more. That they are as far as the East is from the West. Does God hear a Christians prayers even though they might have sin in their live? |
Bible Answer: Dear jalanlambert, Here are some of the verses that your pastor had in mind: "For what is the hope of the godless when God cuts him off, when God takes away his life? Will God hear his cry when distress comes upon him?" (Job 27:8-9 ESV) "Surely God does not hear an empty cry, nor does the Almighty regard it." (Job 35:13 ESV) "If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened." (Psalms 66:18 ESV) "The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD, but the prayer of the upright is acceptable to him." (Proverbs 15:8 ESV) "The LORD is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayer of the righteous." (Proverbs 15:29 ESV) "We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does his will, God listens to him." (John 9:31 ESV) It is specious introducing false dichotomies like "What about the prayer for salvation?" or "What about the prayer for God to reveal my sin?" "No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous." (1 John 3:6-7 ESV) Every human being has sin in his life. If God failed to hear the prayers of someone with sin in their life, no prayers would be heard! The distinction is what the old KJV translators called "regarding sin in your heart." Believers struggle with sin, the lost do not. I'd even posit assuredly that if a man is not struggling with sin, he is not saved. Anyone having hope in Christ purifies himself (1 John 3:3). The lost on the other hand, protect and preserve their sin. "Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, THEN have we confidence toward God. And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, BECAUSE we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight." (1 John 3:21-22 KJV) So don't let anyone deceive you: We must hold the line with what the Scripture says, without compromise nor augmentation. In Him, Doc |
