Bible Question: What does adoption mean in the context of this verse? |
Bible Answer: This word "adoption" was a question that I had myself. I'm not exactly sure who I heard it from but their explanation was this: Paul had been to Rome and this term "adoption" comes from Roman culture. A Roman citizen could disown his own flesh and blood son but if they "adopted" someone they could never disown them. The adopted had full rights in that household and could not be tossed out or denied the rights of that household. They would also be quarenteed their rightful inheritance. I think this a beautiful and accurate meaning for the word "adoption". I'll use these Scriptures but there are probably better ones. Rom 8:29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate [to be] conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Rom 8:30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.
