NASB | Galatians 6:17 ¶ From now on let no one cause trouble for me, for I bear on my body the brand-marks of Jesus. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Galatians 6:17 ¶ From now on let no one trouble me [by making it necessary for me to justify my authority as an apostle, and the absolute truth of the gospel], for I bear on my body the branding-marks of Jesus [the wounds, scars, and other outward evidence of persecutions--these testify to His ownership of me]. |
Subject: What were the "marks of the Lord Jesus"? |
Bible Note: The Zondervan NASB Study Bible states here, "'brand-marks of Jesus.' In ancient times the Greek word was used of the brand-marks that identified slaves or animals. Paul's suffering (stoning, Acts 14:19; beatings, Acts 16:22; 2 Cor. 11:25; illness, 2 Cor. 12:7; Gal. 4:13-14) marked him as a "bond-servant of Christ" (Gal. 1:10; cf. 2 Cor. 4:10)." The Ryrie Expanded Edition NASB Study Bible suggests, "'brand marks.' I.e., scars suffered in persecution, which spoke more eloquently than the mark of circumcision that the Judaizers sought to impose." Nelson's NKJV Study Bible adds, "Paul's physical body carried the hard evidence of his allegiance to the Lord Jesus, the marks of harsh persecution (see 2 Cor. 11:23-26) suffered for preaching the gospel. Paul's scars branded him as a slave for Christ (Rom. 1:1). Such marks far outweighed the 'mark' of circumcision so valued by the false teachers in Galatia (vv. 12-15)." |
