Bible Question: I was born into a church that excommunicates parents for circumcizing their male children, based on Paul's injuction in Galatians chapter 5 from verse 2. My question is, what is the context in which Paul gave the injunction? Does it mean that Gentiles that are circumcized have really fallen away from the grace? |
Bible Answer: Greetings! Just to add to James210's comments, the context is clearly concerning viewing circumcision as necessary for salvation - not circumscision in and of it's self. Acts 16:3 makes it clear that Paul had no problem with Timothy being circumcizied. Acts 16:1 - "He came to Derbe and then to Lystra, where a disciple named Timothy lived, whose mother was a Jewess and a believer, but whose father was a Greek. 2 The brothers at Lystra and Iconium spoke well of him. 3 Paul wanted to take him along on the journey, so he circumcised him because of the Jews who lived in that area, for they all knew that his father was a Greek."
