NASB | Galatians 5:17 For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Galatians 5:17 For the sinful nature has its desire which is opposed to the Spirit, and the [desire of the] Spirit opposes the sinful nature; for these [two, the sinful nature and the Spirit] are in direct opposition to each other [continually in conflict], so that you [as believers] do not [always] do whatever [good things] you want to do. |
Subject: Quench the Spirit until extinguish? |
Bible Note: Hi The CurtMan, You have written lorenzosjb saying that your post here may have pointed him in the wrong diriection. To the contrary, I think that your answer here was very good. 1) You said that the Spirit can not be quenched, and indeed He can not. You suggested Galatians to him. a. Galatians 5:16, "But I say walk by the *Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. 17 For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh, for these are in oppostion to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please." 1 Thessalonians 5:18, "in everything give thanks; for this is *God's will for you in Christ Jesus. 19 Do not quench the Spirit [I would say spirit], 20 do not despise prophetic utterances." God's will for us is to walk in the Spirit. b. Galatians 5:22, "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 Now those who belong to Christ (Jesus) have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires." 1 Thess 5:23, "Now may the God of peace Himself/ sanctify you completely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus (Christ)." We have the fruit of the Spirit because we belong to Christ Jesus. We are complete in (Him). 1 Thess 5:23-Colossians 1:28 2) You suggested Matthew 28:20 as a Scripture of promise to Lorenzo. I see that as a perfect match to 1 Thess 5:23. Matthew 28:20, "teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I/ am with you always, even to the end of the age." 1 Thess 5:23, "Now may the God of peace Himself/ sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, WITHOUT BLAME at the coming of our Lord Jesus (Christ)." Colossians 1:21, "And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, 22 yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before (Him) holy and BLAMELESS and beyond reproach--23 if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard..." We do not want to grieve the Holy Spirit of God in whom we were sealed. But also, I would say that we do not want to quench the spirit; which is the promise, the pledge, the gift that was given to us. Ephesians 1:13, "In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation--having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the *holy *spirit of promise, *which is given as a pledge..." That's how I see it. Let's keep studying. From the heart, Ray |
