AMPLIFIED 2015 | Galatians 4:9 Now, however, since you have come to know [the true] God [through personal experience], or rather to be known by God, how is it that you are turning back again to the weak and worthless elemental principles [of religions and philosophies], to which you want to be enslaved all over again? |
Subject: Where is the authority for christmas...? |
Bible Note: Good post, Rowdy. Fair and well balanced. C. S. Lewis has some interesting and not infrequently humorous things to say about Christmas. He was never impressed by the "commercial clap-trap" -- his language is colorful -- of secular Christmas. (He held that there are really two separate Christmases, the religious celebration of the Advent of our Lord and the commercial clap-trap). Among other things he called it a season of the year when it was customary and often obligatory to buy gifts of gadgets and trinkets that no sane person would ever think of buying for himself to give to people you hardly knew or perhaps didn't particularly like. ...... Easter too has been commercialized. Eggs and bunnies, not the empty tomb, are the secular world's symbols of Easter. I certainly agree with your caveat about practicing moderation in regard to celebrating these holidays. How tempting it is even to Christians to allow themselves to become so dazzled by the commercial glitz and glitter of these occasions that they forget the spiritual meanings and messages they are supposed to convey. --Hank |
