AMPLIFIED 2015 | Galatians 4:29 But as at that time the child [of ordinary birth] born according to the flesh persecuted the son who was born according to [the promise and working of] the Spirit, so it is now also. [Gen 21:9] |
Subject: Who is him? (Him or him?) |
Bible Note: First people need to read Gal. 4:29 in its immediate CONTEXT. Galatians 4:28-31 (ESV) Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise. [29] But just as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also it is now. [30] But what does the Scripture say? "Cast out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman shall not inherit with the son of the free woman." [31] So, brothers, we are not children of the slave but of the free woman. Then, if you'll go back and read the OT quote or reference in its context, it will shed even more light. Genesis 21:8-10 (ESV) And the child grew and was weaned. And Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned. [9] But Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, laughing. [10] So she said to Abraham, "Cast out this slave woman with her son, for the son of this slave woman shall not be heir with my son Isaac. Once again, we need to look at what the Bible SAYS and then at what it MEANS. And then get into the practical application. One can make too many errors in interpreting the Bible if one skips immediately to the application without bothering to see what it SAYS and MEANS. Hint: try the context. |
