Did you know that christmas was actually outlawed in early America? Do you remember the "turning the tide" Revolutionary War victory of General George Washington over the Hessians on christmas eve? Was that some sacrifice? Did they fight for freedom against tyranny on christmas eve? The answer from history, both cultural and militarily, is a resounding NO! There was no "christmas sacrifice" because christmas wasn't celebrated by Americans. They knew the Germans would be ripe pickings because christmas was a German celebration that was celebrated in drunkenness (as is APPROPRIATE if you observe this day). December 25th was celebrated in honor of that evil pagan god long before the birth of The SAVIOUR. The wreath, so much used at Christmas, was used then, too. It was sacred to Bacchus, the god of drunkenness and revelry. Also, the tree, giving of gifts, and mistletoe at this time – the whole works were all part of that worship. Congress was in session 12/25/1789 - - the first christmas under America's new constitution. The New York city council instituted the city's first police force in response to xmas rioting of 1828. christmas wasn't declared a federal holiday until 6/26/1870!
