Bible Question: Greetings Johnny! Are you saying that we are not commanded in the NT to give 10 percent as tithes? Do you have a scripture where Jesus releases us from this commandment? prayon |
Bible Answer: In the book of Acts 4:32, "The believers were of one heart and soul, and not one of them claimed that anything which he possessed was [exclusively] his own, but everything they had was in common and for the use of all". Vrs 34; "Nor was there a destitute or needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses [above what they needed to survive themselves], proceeded to sell them, and one by one they brought the [full] amount recieved from the sales and laid it at the feet of the Apostles". The believers gave the money out of the goodness of thier hearts. They were under no command to do so. The levites in the old covenant were not given an inheritance of land or houses, but were to be priests that served God in the temple continually. Because they had no way to support themselves, God commanded that the 11 other tribes give ten percent of thier income to support the priests. When Jesus was raised from the dead, the veil of the temple was torn in two, and the temple was later destroyed. Signifying that the old covenant with it's rules and regulations are obsolete because a greater covenant was given thru the life, death and resurrection of the Son of God. Now we are the temple of God and His spitit lives or dwells in each of us who are born again. The story that Jesus himself told about the good samaritan was an example of how we should be toward each other. When you give to help your fellow man you are in essence tithing. We should all learn to be perfect as our heavenly father is perfect, for He causes it to rain on not only the righteous man's crop, but also on the crops of the unrighteous. We should not only give to help those that are in the church, but also your neighbor who is not! The pastor and elders in the church are given the responsability to distribute your gifts as the people in your church have need. And yes, God does love a cheerful giver! |
