Bible Note: Greetings Ray! The significance I see with the definite article is this: The phrase 'ho theos' occurs 261 times in the New Testament. Excluding 2 Cor. 4:4 (which is the subject of debate), the phrase clearly refers to God the Father 259 times. The only exception is found in Phil. 3:19. Here, the stomach is called 'the god' of some individuals. In this particular verse, there is a distinctive format. The phrase 'ho theos' is preceeded by a relative pronoun. Hence the translation is 'whose god is...'. So, I would contend that the evidence is very strong that in 2 Cor. 4:4, 'ho theos' refers to God the Father. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
