Bible Question:
2:14-16 sweet smell can someone clarify these verses for me. i'm having problems with the text. i'll give you an example. All of a sudden I had this sweet smell burning in my body. The guy next to me then exhaled his breath on me and it smelled just like the smell that was burning in me. The longer he exhaled the more I enjoyed the smell that was coming out from him. It was a smell I had never smelled before. I then exhaled my breath onto him that was next to me and he made a very bad frown and turned away in disgust as though he smelled something really bad. which one is saved? the one exhaling the sweet smell or the one exhaling the bad smell. |
Bible Answer: Dear mrxike, The sweet small or fragrance is the analogy Paul used to describe the Gospels and our witness of Christ. It should not be referred to as our physical smell as you have depicted. The below commentary from John Gill should be helpful for your understanding: "For we are unto God a sweet savour,.... They are said to be a sweet savour of Christ, because they have their gifts, grace, and Gospel from him, and he is the subject of their ministry;..." I heard of an expert (perfumer) mentioned that the memory that triggered by the smelling sense lasts the longest comparing to our visual and audio sense. |
