Subject: Our Union with Christ |
Bible Note: "Election is in union with Christ as Ephesians 1:4 states, 'even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him.' Regeneration is based upon union with Christ as Ephesians 2:5 states, 'even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ--by grace you have been saved.' Justification is because of union with Christ as Romans 8:1 and 3:24 states, 'There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,' and 'and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,' respectively. Adoption is through our union with Christ as Ephesians 1:5 states, 'In love he predestined us for adoption through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will.' Sanctification is because of our union with Christ as I Corinthians 1:30 states, 'He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, whom God made our wisdom and our righteousness and sanctification and redemption.' Perseverance is because of our union with Christ as Ephesians 1:13-14 states, 'In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.' We have the promise of glorification because of our union with Christ as 1 Peter 5:10 states, 'And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.' Thus, our union with Christ is not something 'tacked on' to our salvation; it is the grounds for all the facets of our salvation. As Ephesians 1:3 summarizes it: 'Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.'" --Rev. Joseph Braden |
