Bible Note: Dear Ed, This isn't dealing directly with the question, but is more of an aside regarding the Luke 16 passage you mention: The following short work "Discourse to the Greeks Concerning Hades" has been traditionally attributed to Josephus. (There is some evidence, however, that that might not be the case. Of course, regardless of its origins, it would not carry the same weight as Scripture!) The thing I find interesting is how closely it follows the pattern of Jesus' parable in Luke 16. If it were written by Josephus, then it might reflect the Rabbinic perspective of Paradise/Hades/etc. in the first century. On the other hand, the Gospel of Luke would have been extant and available to author at the time this essay was written. http://www.ccel.org/j/josephus/works/hades.htm As I said, I would not suggest basing doctrine on this extra-biblical work. I wouldn't even suggest putting too fine a point on it. I am only offering it to those who might find it of interest. In Him, Doc |
