AMPLIFIED 2015 | 2 Corinthians 12:4 was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible words which man is not permitted to speak [words too sacred to tell]. |
Bible Question: Two questions. (1) Is this Paradise the same as both ones in Luke 23:43 (And He said to him, "Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise.") and Rev 2:7 ('He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will grant to eat of the tree of life which is in the Paradise of God.')? (2) Is the Paradise the same as the Kingdom of Heaven? Thank you. God bless! |
Bible Answer: My answer may open a can of worms but oh well. At the time of Luke 23:43 the Jews had this view of Hades which is often translated Hell. It was place of the spirit dead where they awaited final judgement. We can see this place described in Luke 16 starting in verse 19. Hades/Hell had two sections one a hot dry place and the other Paradise or Abraham Bosom where the righteous dead awaited their Messiah. Upon Jesus' death he descended into Hades/Hell and preached the "Good News" 1 Pet 4:6 Jesus then led the righteous dead in Abraham's bosom or Paradise to Heaven Eph 4:8. That side of Hade/Hell is now empty as Paul tells us to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. 2 Cor 5:8. I believe what Jesus was saying here was the thief was now considered rigtheous and would go to Hades (Jesus hadn't emptied it yet) with the rest of the righteous dead. Jesus would then preach the "Good News" and lead Captivity (the dead) captive to heaven. Now the paradise in Rev 2:7 is talking about Heaven or any place that God resides. Where God is, it is Heaven or Paradise. I hope that did not confuse you more. But you are right the word paradise is used to translate differnt places in the scripture. When it talks of Paradise or Abraham's bosom we know it is talking of the holding place for the righteous dead, that place is now empty. When it talks of paradise the dwelling place of God or uses the term paradise and presence of God we know it is talking of Heaven. Hope this helps. Hope I didn't open too many cans of worms. |
