NASB | 2 Corinthians 1:22 who also sealed us and gave us the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 2 Corinthians 1:22 it is He who has also put His seal on us [that is, He has appropriated us and certified us as His] and has given us the [Holy] Spirit in our hearts as a pledge [like a security deposit to guarantee the fulfillment of His promise of eternal life]. |
Bible Question: When does one receive the Holy Spirit? At what point? Baptisim, Faith? |
Bible Answer: Hi, Searching... The seal of the New Covenant in a believer is indwelling of the Holy Spirit. The injunctions to be "filled with the Spirit" (Ephesians 5:18) are talking about qualitative rather than quantitative. You can't use up the Spirit like you use up gas in a car. In the Lutheran Formula of Concord, they put it very well when they say that "...there is not only a great difference between Christians, one being weak and the other strong in the Spirit, but even the individual Christian in his own life discovers that at one moment he is joyful in the Spirit and at another moment fearful and terrified, at one time ardent in love, strong in faith and in hope, and at another time cold and weak." Doctrinally, it is oddly redundant to use the phrase "Spirit-filled Christian." :-) In Him, Doc |
