NASB | 2 Corinthians 1:22 who also sealed us and gave us the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 2 Corinthians 1:22 it is He who has also put His seal on us [that is, He has appropriated us and certified us as His] and has given us the [Holy] Spirit in our hearts as a pledge [like a security deposit to guarantee the fulfillment of His promise of eternal life]. |
Subject: A Study on the HOLY SPIRIT |
Bible Note: A Study on the HOLY SPIRIT *************************************** The Holy Spirit is intelligent (1 Cor. 2:10-11), has feelings (Ephesians 4:30), and has will (1 Cor. 12:11). He teaches (John 14:26), guides (Romans 8:14), commissions (Acts 13:4), commands men (Acts 8:29), restrains (Gen. 6:3), intercedes (Rom. 8:26), and He speaks (John 15:26; 2 Peter 1:21). The Holy Spirit can be obeyed (Acts 10:19-21), be lied to (Acts 5:3), can be resisted (Acts 7:51), can be reverenced (Psalm 51:11), can be blasphemed (Matt. 12:31), can be grieved (Eph. 4:30), and can be insulted (Heb. 10:29). The Holy Spirit is referred to as "He", and He has a distinct personality (John 16:13-14; 15:26; 16:7-8). The Holy Spirit's name relates Him as an equal to the other Persons of the Trinity (1 Cor. 6:11), and those names show Him doing things that only God could do (Rom. 8:15; John 14:16). The Spirit possesses divine characteristics: Omniscience (1 Cor. 2:10-11), Omnipresence (Psalm 139:7), Omnipotence (Genesis 1:2), Truth (1 John 5:6), Holiness (Luke 11:13), Life (Romans 8:2), and Wisdom (Isaiah 40:13). The Spirit does things that only God could do: creating (Gen. 1:2), inspiring (2 Pet. 1:21), begetting Christ (Luke 1:35), convincing men (John 16:8), regenerating (John 3:5-6), comforting (John 14:16), interceding (Rom. 8:26-27), and sanctifying (2 Thess. 2:13). He is also equally associated with the Father and the Son in Acts 5:3-4, Matt. 28:19, and in 2 Cor. 13:14. In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit gave Life to the creation (Psalm 104:30; Job 33:4), Order to the creation (Isaiah 40:12; Job 26:13), Adornment to the creation (Psalm 33:6; Job 26:13), and Preservation to the creation (Psalm 104:30). Also throughout the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit was 'in' certain people (Gen. 41:38; Num. 27:18; Dan. 4:8; 5:11-14; 6:3). The Holy Spirit 'came upon' many (Judg. 3:10; 6:34; 11:29; 13:25; 1 Sam. 10:9-10; 16:13). The Spirit filled some (Ex. 31:3; 35:31). But the Holy Spirit's personal relationship to people in the Old Testament was limited, since not everyone experienced His work, and His work was not 'permanent' in each case (Psalm 51:11). The Holy Spirit was the Author of Revelation, the Means of Revelation, and the Author of Inspiration in the Old Testament. As for the New Testament, the Holy Spirit is present when we come to salvation in Jesus Christ! The Holy Spirit convicts us of our sin (John 16:8-11). The Holy Spirit regenerates us (Titus 3:5) and gives us a new nature (2 Cor. 5:17) and a new life! (1 John 2:29) All true believers in Christ are indwelt by the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 6:19) and the Spirit is a gift (Rom. 5:5). Believers will never lose the 'indwelling' of the Holy Spirit (John 14:16), and absence of the Spirit is a proof of being unsaved (Romans 8:9). The Holy Spirit baptizes us into the body of Christ! (1 Cor. 12:13, Eph. 4:5, Rom. 6:1-10) The Holy Spirit seals us until the day of redemption (2 Cor. 1:22, Eph. 1:13, 4:30), and the seal is a guarantee of the Christian's eternal security with Jesus Christ! The Holy Spirit gives gifts to the church (1 Peter 4:10, Eph. 2:20, Heb. 2:3-4, Romans 12:6-8, 1 Cor. 12:8-10, 28-30, Eph. 4:11). And the Spirit can fill (or control) a person (Eph. 5:18). Filling produces Christlikeness (Gal. 5:22-23). **************************** Greetings all! The above information was taken from the Ryrie Study Bible Expanded Edition. I have recently underwent a study on the Holy Spirit, and this post expresses some of the "beginnings" of that study. Feel free to add your thoughts also, but I ask that you would supply at least one Scripture reference for every thought that you share. Blessings to you, Makarios |
