NASB | 1 Corinthians 7:9 But if they do not have self-control, let them marry; for it is better to marry than to burn with passion. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Corinthians 7:9 But if they do not have [sufficient] self-control, they should marry; for it is better to marry than to burn with passion. |
Subject: better to marry than to burn |
Bible Note: Dear Brother Mark, It is in keeping with the context of the passage (cf 1 Corinthians 7:2). The same word (also translated "burn") is used similarly in 2 Corinthians 11:29. This metaphorical meaning of the Greek word is confirmed by Strong, Thayer, and Vine. In addition, this interpretation is agreed upon by Augustine, John Calvin, John Gill, Matthew Henry, Albert Barnes, and JFB. (Curiously enough, John Wesley and John Darby do not mention the verse at all.) The ESV -- and this agrees with the NASB and Amplified -- translates the verse: But if they cannot exercise self-control, they should marry. For it is better to marry than to be aflame with passion. (1 Corinthians 7:9) Was there another interpretation that you thought might fit? In Him, Doc |
