NASB | 1 Corinthians 7:14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified through her believing husband; for otherwise your children are unclean, but now they are holy. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Corinthians 7:14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified [that is, he receives the blessings granted] through his [Christian] wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified through her believing husband. Otherwise your children would be [ceremonially] unclean, but as it is they are holy. |
Bible Question:
Does 1 Corinthians 7:14 say that if an unbeliever is married to a believer, the unbeliever (by being 'sanctified') is considered a christian AND their children are also christian? |
Bible Answer: No, 1 Cor 7:14 does not say that the unbelieving spouse and children are "christian". Here is what the verse SAYS: NASB 1 Corinthians 7:14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified through her believing husband; for otherwise your children are unclean, but now they are holy. Here is what the verse MEANS: AMPLIFIED 1 Corinthians 7:14 For the unbelieving husband is set apart (separated, withdrawn from heathen contamination, and affiliated with the Christian people) by union with his consecrated (set-apart) wife, and the unbelieving wife is set apart and separated through union with her consecrated husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean (unblessed heathen, outside the Christian covenant), but as it is they are prepared for God [pure and clean]. |
