Bible Question: I was having a conversation with a new friend and I was sharing my beliefs and they asked me, why don't Christians smike, and I gave them the "I can't see Jesus doing it" response to which I was asked, do I have any backing i.e biblical reason, for my answer |
Bible Answer: Hi Teemc and welcome to the forum, When I became a Christian, back in 1965, I smoked like steam engine; I mean three packs a day with a cigar in between and the best of pipes! I knew that I needed to quit smoking, even before I believed on the person of Christ, but I was so hooked on smoking that I couldn’t quit. While reading the Bible and feeding my gigantic hunger for God Word, I come across the following and it spelled it out so clear to me that I had to quit. 1 Cor. 6:12 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. The words, “but I will not be brought under the power of any”, came at me screaming, saying, “anything that is habit forming has me under its power and it’s wrong.” I literally climbed the walls when I quit smoking, but every time I got the urge to smoke I would just pray that the Lord would help me until the urge went away. I was able to quit smoking “only” because I had a new source of help, The Lord Himself: one more reason to praise the Lord! That was one of the hardest things I think I have ever done in my life. The only good thing about “my smoking” was that I could never get lost in the woods; rescuers could always see the column of smoke and pull me out; I also was much warmer to be around in those day because I was always burning something, if people could stand it and get past the smell of old “tobacco breath yellow fingers”. I mean I smoked so much people could just look for me and find out which way the wind was blowing and at different altitudes. I figured, after I was a believer, if the Lord wanted me to smoke He probably would have built one of those tobacco rods sticking out of my face to start with: that part was my idea and it's not scriptural. That’s the reason I don’t smoke as a Christian. I hope you enjoy the forum, CDBJ |
