Bible Question: According to the verse above, does it mean that there was baptism on behalf of those who are dead during the times of Apostle Paul? And if that be the case, what was the use for it? It is a strange thing, but I seek to understand - someone challenges me to tell me that this justifies the act of offering prayers on behalf of those who have departed, which I find most strange. Please share what you have. Thank you. |
Bible Answer: Hello, datchepaul... Welcome to the forum! In Jewish tradition, the body of a loved one is carefully cleaned, dressed, and prepared for burial by close family members. I am of the opinion that Paul was thinking of this, as he wrote the passage to the Corinthian church -- baptism is a transliterated word meaning washing. As Christians, we look forward to glorification, we do not see the body as just an "empty shell." Hence, we treat it with dignity and respect, knowing that it will one day rise again. Mormons are one of the cults that build entire practices and teaching on this verse. Which thing should be a warning to us all: building faith and practice on single verse is generally a sign of false teaching. In Him, Doc |
