Bible Note: Hi johnclin What Paul is saying here gets lost in our translation. The believers in verse 22 are the saved church and the unbelievers is the lost. He is saying tongues is not for inside the church where everyone is saved but rather outside where unbelievers will hear in their own language and be saved. However prophecy is for the church to encourage edify and exhort them to go forward in Christ. Prophecy for the unbeliever does little good because they don't understand the spiritual overtones. However later he says prophecy as in preaching will convict them and cause them to repent from sin and turn to Christ. You see there is two kinds of tongues. One where a person speaks in language which he does not know but is the other persons native tongue. This is for outside the church. for the unbeliever. We see this in Acts 2 Then there is the heavenly language which is spoken in private prayer or as a message that must be translated. It is not to be used in church unless there is a translation. Which Paul is talking about here in chapter 14. Here is where many abuses come in. First people speak out in tongues for what ever reason (excitement, emotion, to demonstrate their spirituality, etc.) but there is no translation this is wrong. Or if there is a translation it is so generic so vanilla one simply knows it isn’t God speaking but someone just speaking what is on their heart. These are the sky is blue the grass is green and God loves you type messages. Also there many that just pray in tongues while their minds are in idle and they mediate on whatever. This is also wrong and not real different that a manta we see being used by eastern religions. It is easy many have become accustom to going into their prayer closets and just praying in tongues not thinking about what their saying or doing believing they are praying when in fact they are just mindlessly repeating what is coming to them. To pray in tongues we should be focused on God and what the spirit is leading us to pray for. Just as there are two type of tongues there is two types of prophecy. The first is God audibly speaking through another to convey a message of encouragement, edification of exhortation to his people. This is usually proceeded by a demonstration of the tongues from which this prophecy is translated or simply given in church’s common tongue. Again this is often abused by those that want recognition or get caught up in the moment and begin to speak what is on their hearts. The other type of prophecy and by far the most common is prophecy by the exposition of God’s word which we call preaching. This is for the believer but also when done by the leading of the Holy Spirit will convict unbelievers of their sin. There are those that claim these sign gifts have stopped with the death of the last Apostle but I do not see this. And since we have preaching today I have to believe they are still in force and will be until the perfect that is Christ Jesus returns. I see these as being very commonly abused by some that feel the sign gifts make them closer to God, exhibit more spirituality or in some way prove there is a God. There is much discussion and debate over this but I think the real problem comes from the abuses rather than the actual occurrence of the gifts. If people that hold to these sign gifts would exercise them as instructed here in this scripture and it was done only at the leading of the Holy Spirit it would not happen very often and when it did it wouldn’t upset everyone. I have a great friend that speaks only English lead a woman who spoke only Spanish to Lord. She heard everything he told her about Jesus in her own language yet he was speaking English. This happened in such a way that no one present could/would question if it was real or not they knew Gods’ hand was in it. If these gifts have stopped then how do we explain this? I have also been blessed with a prayer language that comes upon me when I’m in deep prayer over a situation, however I do not exhibit this in public but only in my own prayer closet. As I pray in this language while I don’t have a word for word understanding I do know and understand it is the situation being prayed about and myself spirit receives a release from the turmoil it held about the situation. A peace comes over me and I know the Holy Spirit prayed on my behalf as my helper and comforter to God the father for His intervention in the situation. I hope this helps EdB |
